  • Evidence for a metal-poor population in the inner Galactic bulge

The inner Galactic bulge has, until recently, been avoided in chemical evolution studies because of extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Large, near-IR spectroscopic surveys, such as the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), for the first time allow the measurement of metallicities in the inner region of our Galaxy

  • Evidence for Black Hole Event Horizons?, or Luminosities of Black Hole and Neutron Star Transients

Recently, models for Advection Dominated Accretion Flow (ADAF) have been shown to explain many of the quiescent properties of the X-ray and optical emission from black hole soft X-ray transients (BH SXT) (Narayan, McClintock and Yi 1996 ApJ 457, 821; Narayan, Barret and McClintock 1996, submitted to ApJ). One novel feature of the ADAF model is that

  • Evidence for Blue Straggler Stars Rejuvenating the Integrated Spectra of Globular Clusters

Integrated spectroscopy is the method of choice for deriving the ages of unresolved stellar systems. However, hot stellar evolutionary stages, such as hot horizontal branch stars and blue straggler stars (BSSs), can affect the integrated ages measured using Balmer lines. Such hot, ``noncanonical'' stars may lead to overestimation of the temperature

  • Evidence for Collisional Depolarization in the MgH Lines of the Second Solar Spectrum

The analysis of the Hanle effect in solar molecular lines allows us to obtain empirical information on hidden, mixed-polarity magnetic fields at subresolution scales in the (granular) upflowing regions of the ``quiet'' solar photosphere. Here we report that collisions seem to be very efficient in depolarizing the rotational levels of MgH lines

  • Evidence for Fine Structure in the Chromospheric Umbral Oscillation

Novel spectropolarimetric observations of the He I multiplet are used to explore the dynamics of the chromospheric oscillation above sunspot umbrae. The results presented here provide strong evidence in support of the two-component model proposed by Socas-Navarro and coauthors. According to this model, the waves propagate only inside channels of

  • Evidence for magnetic field compression in shocks within the jet of V404 Cyg

We present optical and near-IR linear polarimetry of V404 Cyg during its 2015 outburst and in quiescence. We obtained time-resolved r'-band polarimetry when the source was in outburst, near-IR polarimetry when the source was near quiescence and multiple waveband optical polarimetry later in quiescence. The optical-to-near-IR linear polarization
