  • An evolved donor star in the long-period cataclysmic variable HS 0218+3229
Context: We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of HS 0218+3229, a new long-period cataclysmic variable discovered within the Hamburg Quasar Survey. It is one of the few systems that allow a dynamical measurement of the masses of the stellar components. Aims: We combine the analysis of time-resolved optical spectroscopy and R-band

  • An Asymptotic Solution for the Navier-Stokes Equation
We have used as the velocity field of a fluid the functional form derived in Casuso (2007), obtained by studying the origin of turbulence as a consequence of a new description of the density distribution of matter as a modified discontinuous Dirichlet integral. Asan interesting result we have found that this functional form for velocities is a

  • An anticorrelation between X-ray luminosity and Hα equivalent width in X-ray binaries
We report an anticorrelation between continuum luminosity and the equivalent width (EW) of the Hα emission line in X-ray binary systems. The effect is evident both in a universal monotonic increase in Hα EW with time following outbursts, as systems fade, and in a comparison between measured EWs and contemporaneous X-ray measurements. The effect is

  • A Planet in a 0.6 AU Orbit Around the K0 Giant HD 102272
We report the discovery of one or more planet-mass companions to the K0-giant HD 102272 with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. In the absence of any correlation of the observed periodicities with the standard indicators of stellar activity, the observed radial velocity variations are most plausibly explained in terms of a Keplerian motion of at least one

  • A Novel Precise Method for Correcting the Temperature in Stellar Atmosphere Models
A mayor problem that arises in the computation of stellar atmosphere models is the self consistent determination of the temperature distribution via the constraint of energy conservation. The energy balance includes the gains due to the absorption of radiation: int χ(ν) J(ν) dν, and the losses due to emission: int χ(ν) S(ν) dν . It is well known
