Formación y Evolución de Galaxias (FYEG)

Las galaxias se forman de manera progresiva por medio de una compleja combinación de acreción de gases, formación estelar y procesos de fusión con otras galaxias. La línea de investigación en Formación & Evolución de Galaxias tiene por objetivo desvelar los mecanismos físicos responsables de las transformaciones más significativas en dichos objetos a partir del estudio de las distintas subestructuras que las forman. El equipo de investigación que conforma la línea está fuertemente involucrado en el desarrollo de instrumentación puntera (EMIR, FRIDA, GTCAO, HARMONI, OSIRIS, WEAVE) y tiene un paper importante en la explotación científica y el desarrollo de proyectos de ámbito internacional (SDSS, EUCLID, LSST) para el estudio de la formación y evolución de galaxias.

La línea destaca por estudios sobre la estructura tridimensional de la Vía Láctea (incluyendo su sistema de cúmulos globulares y galaxias satélite), la caracterización de las poblaciones estelares y dinámica de galaxias cercanas, el ciclo de actividad de los agujeros negros super masivos en los centros de las galaxias,  las condiciones del medio interestelar en las primeras galaxias, y el papel de la materia oscura en la evolución de las mismas. Además, gracias a la reciente creación del grupo de simulaciones. se busca relacionar las observaciones con la teoría por medio de modelos numéricos en volúmenes cosmológicos, y obtener así predicciones para futuras observaciones.
